Nestle boss spells out the biggest global threat
Reviewed by Dawn “Belladonna” Thomas I have been interested in global warming so when a friend recommended this book I thought I would check it out. The book is written in a way that it is possible to see what earth would happen if global warming is not contained. It shows what changes will occur by a degree at a time. There is a tipping point that we all should be concerned with. If we cannot make the changes necessary before this point is reached, there may be no stopping global warming. The book begins at one degree. I was amazed to read the changes and losses that the earth has already suffered and we are not even at the one degree mark yet. The first loss is an amphibian in Costa Rica’s Monteverde’s Cloud Forest known as a golden toad. This toad could only be found in this area and the last time that anyone has seen one was May 15, 1989. That is an eye opening fact that with depleted natural resources nature is suffering. Another change noted is the condition of the world’s coral reefs. As the waters get warmer the algae that lives in the coral dies off. When the algae die off the coral then dies off since it doesn’t get the sugar the algae produced that it needs to survive. At the second degree the number of monsoons will decrease in China. This will cause less water to flow into the rivers. There is a reference to a heat wave in Europe occurring in 2003. In this event there were 22,000 to 35,000 people thought to have died. The number of heatstroke victims in Pari

Wednesday, March 17, 2010 The United States Federal Communications Commission released a plan to provide broadband Internet access to at least 90% of the American population today, and sent a copy of the plan to Congress, which will consider whether to introduce legislation to enact portions of the proposal. Other parts will be decided on by various government agencies. The plan is intended to spur adoption of broadband Internet in the US by extending broadband access to areas of the country, such as rural areas, that do not currently have such access, as well as substantially increasing the speed of existing broadband installations. Currently, only around 65% of American households have broadband connectivity; if approved, the new plan would increase that number to 90% by 2020. According to a statement from the FCC, the plan would provide a "foundation for economic growth, job creation, global competitiveness and a better way of life." More...

alphadogg writes "Zer01 Mobile — making promises of flat rate, no contract, unlimited cell phone service — made its grand entrance at the annual CTIA wireless convention about a year ago, but now the company's Web site has disappeared. The site recently began redirecting visitors to Google.com. Zer01, which was lauded for its plans in the mainstream press, aligned itself with a multilevel marketing company called Global Verge (whose founder had earlier been convicted of securities fraud), and the two companies began recruiting salespeople who paid a monthly fee to be part of a sales program. (Since then, Global Verge and Zer01 parted ways and Global Verge filed a lawsuit against its former partner.) But no mobile service from Zer01 ever materialized. Salespeople were promised payment based on how many other salespeople they signed up to the program, although few appear to have received payment. But as late as the fall CTIA show in October, Zer01's CEO was still promising to launch the mobile service." Read more of this story at Slashdot.

DENVER, March 16, 2010 – Transparent access to people and information is Enterprise 2.0’s great promise. It’s tempered, however, by a privacy risk that is especially sensitive in the European Union, where social profiles and other content are subject to privacy laws and regulations. A new white paper sponsored by NewsGator addresses this dilemma head on. Drawing on interviews with six prominent companies, “Implementing Enterprise 2.0 within the European Union: Transparency and Emergence vs. Privacy and Compliance” scopes the issues, identifies obstacles, provides lessons learned and offers some best approaches. The paper is authored by Carl Frappaolo of Information Architected Inc. and The 2.0 Adoption Council. “In order to remain competitive but also compliant, European organizations, and global organizations with offices in Europe, need to balance knowledge access and social computing with privacy,” writes Frappaolo. “The focus of this report is this very issue, and how organizations that have been successful with Enterprise 2.0 initiatives have dealt with privacy issues, using not just a single approach but a range of approaches.” Among the report’s findings: • Corporate culture matters: The urgency of privacy concern depends to some degree on a company’s locale and vertical industry, but its corporate culture exerts the greatest effect on its perspective. • The virtual world complicates: Although privacy is regulated at a regional and local level, the virtual

We mentioned late last year how open source software called Ushahidi — which means 'testimony' in Swahili — developed for election monitoring in Kenya was being used to similar effect in Afghanistan. Now reader Peace Corps Online adds a report from the NY Times that Usahidi's is now becoming a hero of the Haitian and Chilean earthquakes. "Ushahidi is used to gather distributed data via SMS, email, or web and visualize it on a map or timeline. The program was developed after violence erupted during Kenya's disputed election in 2007. Ory Okolloh, a prominent Kenyan lawyer and blogger, had gone back to Kenya to vote and observe the election. After receiving threats about her work, she returned to South Africa where she posted her idea of an Internet mapping tool to allow people to report anonymously on violence and other misdeeds. Volunteers built the Ushahidi Web platform over a long weekend, and the site began plotting on a map, using the locations given by informants, user-generated cellphone reports of riots, stranded refugees, rapes, and deaths. When the Haitian earthquake struck, Ushahidi went into action receiving thousands of messages reporting trapped victims; the same happened following the Chile earthquake. The Washington Post also used Ushahidi during the recent blizzards to build a site to map road blockages and the location of available snowplows and blowers. 'Ushahidi suggests a new paradigm in humanitarian work,' writes Anand Giridharadas. 'The old pa
Filed under: Gaming, Software, Apple, Developer, iPhone, iPad On the third day of GDC 2010, Ngmoco's Neil Young took the stage in one of the largest rooms at the conference to talk about what his company had "unlearned" in its time in the App Store. Ngmoco has become a large and polarizing figure in the world of App Store development -- after starting out with a big investment from the iFund, it's moved quickly to become one of the biggest iPhone-only developers, and after starting out with a few premium titles like the very successful Rolando, have recently made waves with its "freemium" business model. Young talked about the company's history so far, and went in-depth on Ngmoco's plan for ruling the App Store and why he believes it's the "most significant shift and opportunity for [game developers] since the birth of this business." We've summarized Young's long address in this post. It was pretty incredible -- not only did Young lay out his idea of a clear plan for building and developing a large portfolio of very profitable App Store titles "at scale" (the company plans to release twenty new freemium products on the iPhone in the near future, as well as six titles on the iPad), but he made it very clear that he fervently believes that freemium and the model he's structured is the future of the video game business. He began with a recounting of the history of the company (complete with a Mark Twain quote and impersonation -- later in the lively talk, he also imitated Don
Filed under: Apple CorporateWhat began as a jovial relationship between Google and Apple has devolved into an ugly personal and legal battle that's only getting worse. In 2006, Google CEO Dr. Eric Schmidt joined Apple's board of directors. Google and Apple collaborated on the iPhone's mapping services, and a year later, Schmidt joined Jobs on stage during the iPhone's introduction at Macworld Expo. The two men were all smiles and compliments, and the venture looked bright. After the iPhone's release in the US, both companies went about their business, both collaboratively and independently. While Apple worked on solidifying a foothold in the global smartphone market, Google continued development on Android and the Chrome OS -- both competitors to Apple's iPhone and OS X. Eventually, the divergent interests of Apple and Google came to a head, and Dr. Schmidt resigned from his position on Apple's board due to "...conflicts of interest." Today, The New York Times points out, the chasm between these two men and their companies is deep and personal. At a recent town hall-style employee meeting, Jobs had harsh words for his former collaborator: "We did not enter the search business. They entered the phone business. Make no mistake: they want to kill the iPhone. We won't let them." Schmidt offered a conciliatory response to the Times, saying, "I continue to believe, as many do, that Steve Jobs is the best C.E.O. in the world today, and I admire Apple and Steve enormously." Ear

This will make the Wellington ACTA negotiations more exciting - the European Parliament has asked to have full access to ACTA documents, and wants this to be granted to the public too. Furthermore, the ACTA talks should be limited to counterfeiting, include developing and emerging countries (and not just the rich ones), plus, and this is important, they must not be used to limit access to cheap and safe medicines. That last part is often forgotten in the furore around ACTA, and it's hugely important for people everywhere, including New Zealand. On the Internet side of things, no "three-strikes" rules to be imposed; only the courts can order that people's Internet access is cut off, as anything else would violate their fundamental rights such as freedom of expression and privacy. No border searches and confiscations without warrants of laptops, mobile phones and MP3 players by customs to be introduced either. Interestingly enough, the whole ACTA circus seems to be conducted without any mandate from the European Parliament, which threatens to go to the Court of Justice unless its demands are met before the meeting in Wellington. We'll see if the different countries involved in the ACTA talks, including New Zealand, can ignore the European Parliament, but its resolution is the strongest message so far to them that they must engage with the public and not ride rough-shod over their rights.   Link to the full text of the European Parliament resolution of 10 March 2010 on the

theodp writes "ComputerWorld reports that IBM has stopped providing breakouts on US employees, closing a door to data that provided insights into the bellwether company's employment shift. In its latest Annual Report, Big Blue only provides its global headcount, and an IBM spokesman confirmed that disclosure of US headcount is a thing of the past. The Rochester Institute of Technology's Ron Hira called the US workforce data critical for policymakers trying to understand the dynamics of offshoring. 'By hiding its offshoring, IBM is doing a disservice to America — through omission the company is providing misleading labor market signals and information to policy makers,' Hira said. Ironically, CEO Sam Palmisano's Letter to Shareholders, which accompanied the Annual Report, touts how IBM's Analytics and 'Smarter Planet' efforts are empowering US government decision-makers. Nondisclosure domestically and abroad seems to be the new rule of thumb for Big Tech, sparking calls for government intervention." IBM laid off about 10,000 US workers last year, and 2,900 so far this year, according to the Alliance@IBM, a labor union. Read more of this story at Slashdot.

True to form, the simple answer of "March 12th" is not adequate for the real early adopters, and they ask again: Yes, I know that, but what time can I push the button? Will the NZ$900 million Pacific Fibre cable mooted by messieurs Drury, Morgan, Tindall, Rushworth, Humphrey and Wiggs succeed? Certainly, the list of founders is impressive with everyone on it not only having an understanding of why Big Fat Pipes with Low Latency are a good thing, but they also have real incentives for the Pacific Fibre cable to succeed - Rod Drury and Sam Morgan especially, with their Internet-based businesses depending on good networks. John Humphrey is a satellite and cable guy of long standing that I met at the Shin Sat IPstar launch way too many years ago (and, I ended up with a huge dish on my roof as proof that it was indeed possible to deliver decent broadband via birds high up in the sky). Mark Rushworth and Lance Wiggs get what the Internet is about, and having Stephen Tindall onboard isn't going to hurt Pacific Fibre in the slightest. Of course, having lots of well-known names onboard doesn't equate success but Pacific Fibre is launching into a market that's difficult to satiate at the moment. It's almost as if you need to dimension networks according to the capacities of their computers' storage and interface speeds - you need to get as close as possible to those two factors to keep customers happy. The 5.12 Terabits per second that the Pacific Fibre cable is supposed to launch with probably isn't that much over the next decade or so, and it's good to see a 12 Tbit/s upgrade has been factored in. Having lots of bandwidth for large video, audio,
by Jason Pitzl-Waters It’s time for the Pagan hysteria watch, where we spotlight some stories and editorials that get a wee bit over-excited in their rhetoric. Let’s start with an obvious source, conservatives defining environmental activism, and agreement with the scientific consensus concerning climate change, as a “new paganism”. Yes, it must be a “religion”, because “more and more evidence is surfacing against global warming claims”, even though the majority of that “evidence” has been overblown and distorted in the media, and the scientific community is being increasingly bullied by activists and politicians for not changing their position on global warming. Maybe they want to prove it’s a religion by producing martyrs? In any case, while times are tough for Al Gore (a “high priest” of the “new paganism”), our current President doesn’t escape accusations that he’s involving us all in paganism!
